The December 2000 “Breathing Space” picture is a long dock in the Caribbean Sea. There’s a bird standing on the end of the dock, and you see waves rolling in in the distance. The sea is a beautiful turquoise blue, with patches of green where there’s a fair amount of seaweed in the water. The sky is a gorgeous blue, with a scattering of white puffy clouds.
The picture is meant to take your mind off of the weather outside (which also works for Chicago in April), and it’s also meant to calm.
I love water and swimming. If I have a spa treatment, I’ll opt for hydrotherapy whenever possible. The water calms me in a way like nothing else can. It’s optimal that I live by a large lake for that very reason.
I went to college in the middle of Indiana, and the campus had done some research and found that water attracted students to their school, so they built a little pond. It’s interesting that water has that much aesthetic power.
